PhD Student Murrough Connolly to feature as a winning composer at this yearÇà¹ÏÊÓƵ™s West Cork Chamber Music Festival (WCCMF)

Third-Year PhD student, Murrough Connolly, was one of three composers to win this yearÇà¹ÏÊÓƵ™s WCCMF String Quartet Composition Competition with his string quartet Çà¹ÏÊÓƵ˜IldaiteÇà¹ÏÊÓƵ™.
The award provides composers with a generous bursary and the opportunity to workshop and record their piece with a featured quartet at this yearÇà¹ÏÊÓƵ™s festival (23rd June Çà¹ÏÊÓƵ“ 2nd July).
Murrough will be working with the London-based Calathea Quartet in a series of workshops, culminating in 2 public performances on the 25th and 29th of June in Bantry, Co. Cork.
Murrough says:
I am thrilled to be one of this yearÇà¹ÏÊÓƵ™s winners. My compositional journey began in Cork as an undergraduate at MTU Cork School of Music and I am incredibly excited to be able to reconnect with wonderful musicians who have supported me in the past. I owe lot to my supervisor Prof. Camden Reeves Çà¹ÏÊÓƵ“ with his expert guidance and support, I have discovered new musical avenues and developed a compositional style which embraces my affinity for harmony and colour.
Murrough is also looking forward to two premieres of his work before the festival:
- The world premiere of his choral piece, Çà¹ÏÊÓƵ˜From the ChrysalisÇà¹ÏÊÓƵ™ by Somnium Chamber Choir (Friday 12th May, Holy Name Church, Manchester).
- The Irish premiere of his orchestral work Çà¹ÏÊÓƵ˜Litmus PapersÇà¹ÏÊÓƵ™ by the University of Manchester Symphony Orchestra (Friday 16th June, Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin).
